Summer 2007

The Boat Inn

Sprotborough, Doncaster

The Boat Inn, Sprotborough

The "Boat Inn" at Sprotbrough is the Doncaster Pub of the Season for Summer 2007. Situated close to the Trans-Pennine Trail, this attractive, multi-roomed pub is popular with walkers, diners and the local community.

It is also popular with drinkers, and one of the main reasons for the members of the Doncaster & District Branch of CAMRA giving this award is the quality of the beer! There are two real ales regularly available. One of them is John Smith's Cask and the other is Black Sheep Best Bitter. Ever since the latter was introduced, the "Boat Inn" has been regularly featured in the Good Beer Guide. In Summer months an additional guest beer is also often available.

This pub has a wonderful location and, it is alleged, it was whilst residing here that Sir Walter Scott wrote his famous book "Ivanhoe". Situated as it is, by the river and close to one of the country's most famous long-distance footpaths, the pub is a welcome "watering hole" for weary walkers who have worked up a thirst. There is a lovely sheltered courtyard in which you can sit and soak up the sun whilst enjoying a well-kept beer.

The interior of the pub is also very attractive with its many rooms, exposed beams and rustic ambience. There is an extensive menu and food is served throughout the day - which is great because the "Boat" is open all day every day!

Another reason why a visit to the "Boat" is such a pleasant experience is that the staff are so friendly and helpful. They are actually willing to have a chat with customers, and this is becoming a rarity these days!

Congratulations to Lewis and all the staff on this well deserved accolade. Good beer, good pub, good location and friendly people - definitely a perfect recipe for a Pub of the Season!
