Pub of the Season

Summer 2006

The Scarbrough Arms

Tickhill

The Scarbrough Arms

Our Summer 2006 Pub Of The Season Award goes to the Scarbrough Arms on Sunderland Street in Tickhill, an absolute gem which now joins the elite ranks of those pubs which have received this award an amazing four times. It was also winner of the branch's very first ever Pub Of The Year Award back in 1997 and has appeared in the CAMRA 'Good Beer Guide' every year since 1990.

Licensee Neil Travis took over at the Scarbrough Arms in 1985, having previously run the Freemasons at Hillsborough in Sheffield. By this time it had passed through a succession of owners to John Smith's and was in a sorry state. Under Neil's custody however, this hostelry has gone from strength to strength and was one of the first to take cask beers from John Smith's when they were re-introduced. Guest Beers were soon added, a policy that has continued through the various further changes in ownership to, currently, Enterprise Inns.

Presently, two guest beers are usually available, one from the company's own portfolio, currently Wychwood Hobgoblin but soon to be replaced by Caledonian Deuchars IPA, and one of Neil's choice - researched using the CAMRA 'Good Beer Guide'. These have included beers from local Yorkshire breweries as well as those from much further afield, with the staff reporting that as many as three different ones are often got through in a week. Also served are John Smith's Cask, Courage Directors' and Greene King Abbot Ale, all are served in over-sized lined glasses, one of only four outlets I can think of that use them in our area. The Scarbrough Arms has now become a very popular village focal point, with its interesting three-roomed layout. This consists of a large comfortable lounge; the middle 'barrel room' (which is a snug with no intrusive noise from loudspeakers or fruit machines and a glorious roaring log fire in winter) and a tap room, where dominoes and bar billiards are played. There is also an extensive beer garden and children's play area, which is extremely busy on summer evenings. Opening hours are Monday 12noon - 3pm - 6pm - 11.30pm, Tuesday to Friday 11am - 3pm - 6pm - 11pm; Saturday 11am - 11pm, Sunday 12noon - 10.30pm. Two quizzes are held, Monday is general knowledge and Thursday is a test for music lovers. Congratulations to Neil on achieving this accolade. Why not join us for the presentation on the evening of 5th August, in the lounge? But you don't have to wait until then to experience the Scarbrough's hospitality and sample the excellent beers. There are frequent buses from Doncaster's newly opened Frenchgate Interchange and the last one returns from Tickhill at 10.45pm ( 9.45pm on Sundays ).
